City considers amalgamation of Bird Park and Mitchell Park Zoo

A report outlining the amalgamation of uMngeni River Bird Park with Mitchell Park Zoo was tabled at a Full Council meeting on 31 May.

A PLAN for the amalgamation of Durban’s uMngeni River Bird Park with Mitchell Park Zoo is currently awaiting approval by the city’s Community Services Committee.

A report outlining the proposal was tabled at a meeting of council last week.

According to eThekwini Municipality’s acting head of communications Mandla Nsele, the report noted that the uMngeni River Bird Park was currently under a three year management contract with Top Administration Services while Mitchell Park Zoo was managed by the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture (PRC) Unit.

“The report noted that Top Administration Services and staff members currently employed under this contract have no objections to the takeover of this function, subject to the remuneration being placed at applicable salary scales and being placed on a close match basis with staff from the PRC Unit,” he said.

The report also recommended that the uMngeni River Bird Park employees be accordingly placed before the expiry of the current three year contract.
