Glenwood pool company steps up to support youth centre

Children at Durban Child and Youth Care Centre are enjoying their newly renovated swimming pool.

AFTER more than a year, the swimming pool at Durban Child and Youth Care Centre (DCYCC) has been repaired and restored for the children living at the home to use.

Nicolette Modicka from DCYCC said this was made possible after Angel Projects approached Sunshine Pools on behalf of DCYCC. Sunshine Pools in response, approached their suppliers to partner with them to make this project a reality.

Angel Projects, is powered by consulting company SDG, which initially became involved with DCYCC as a financial consultant.

Modicka has mentioned the state of the pool to Mariley Liebenberg from SDG, and said its renovation was top of the centre’s wish list.

“The pool had not been in operation for 18 months. We tried to get funders on board, but there were no takers, as they didn’t see the revamp of the pool as a need as opposed to caring for the children’s daily needs. It was a burden hanging over our heads. We asked Mariley to see what she could do,” said Nicolette.

“We tried really hard over December to get something done, as this is such a hot time of the year and the children who were on holiday could’ve really enjoying being able to swim. The worst is it was there for the children to see, but they couldn’t use it! These kids deserve the best, especially a brand new pool. Too many companies were closed over this time, but I made a few calls and pulled a few strings and was very grateful when Wayne Black from Sunshine Pools responded to the campaign. He approached some of his suppliers to assist,” said Mariley.

Wayne and Leon Sewduth from Sunshine Pools said they were glad they could do something to help.

“We discussed this project with our suppliers and they very generously supplied us with new equipment, it is literally a brand new pool,” said Leon.

“Pools are so important for children as free play builds confidence and improves them physically as well. As a company based in Glenwood, we were pleased to be able to do something to help the community. There will be ongoing maintenance costs, but we will see what we can do to help,” said Wayne.
