THE Democratic Alliance Student Organization (DASO) at the Durban University of Technology, has expressed its shock over the recent surge of violent attacks on students on DUT campuses and at other institutions of higher education and training throughout the country.

This come after the organisation’s deputy chairperson Linda Stone, was violently attacked and his possessions stolen on Saturday 19 May allegedly after a taxi dropped him off 100m from the DUT gate. Stone suffered bruises on his back and chest in his fight against the thugs.

According to Sakhile Mngadi , the interim chairperson of DASO DUT the campus security was alerted to the incident, but by the time they responded it was too late.

“DASO DUT is currently investigating the incident and other similar claims relating to taxis not using their official designated routes and leaving students in areas that put their lives in danger. There have been other cases on and off campus, where students have reported gruesome attacks made on them, by assailants who are not investigated and arrested. More needs to be done, in ensuring that perpetrators of crimes are dealt with on DUT campuses,” said Mngadi.

Mngadi further said DASO believed that campus safety was the University’s responsibility.

“DASO rejects any form of any violence no matter your gender, sex, sexuality, race language or economic background. Any form of assault and harassment should be taken seriously. We call upon the University and SAPS to ensure that student safety is prioritised and taken more seriously,” he said.
