Police urge residents to be vigilant

Durban Central SAPS urges residents and motorists to be aware of their surroundings.

DURBAN Central Police Station is urging the community to be vigilant following cases of pick-pocketing in Durban.

According to Constable Zanele Khomo from Durban Central, it has been noted that over the past two weeks people have come forward to open cases of pick-pocketing which she said resulted in the police identifying a modus operandi used by a suspect.

“Most victims are cornered by the suspect when crossing the robot and the suspect uses that chance to pick-pocket them. Most wanted and targeted items are cellphones. We appeal to the community not to talk or be on social media while they are crossing at a robot since this is inviting the suspect to act,” she said.

SAPS is also appealing to motorists to be vigilant when stationary at intersections. “Windows and doors must be properly locked and valuables such as cellphones and laptops should not be visible,” she said.

She urged people coming from banks with a lump sum of money not to speak to strangers who could rob them of their cash.

“The community needs to be vigilant at all times especially around the Durban Central Business District and surroundings. We appeal to the community to work hand in hand with police and report if they suspect something or witness any crime committed,” said Khomo.
