Umcebo hosts school workshop

Umcebo Design hosts these workshops to encourage people to see the creative potential of recycling.

A SERIES of four workshops held by Umcebo Design at the Tree Tops Windmill Road Campus has resulted in a beautiful sunflower mural which will be treasured by the school for years to come.

Robin Opperman, creative director at Umcebo, said the organisation hosts the workshops to encourage people to see the creative potential of recycling.

“Teachers who are in charge of the eco or recycling portfolio at schools are sometimes stuck for ideas, but we come in and show them the creative potential and possibilities for creative recycling,” said Robin, adding Umcebo had also run these workshops at Clifton School, and was working on a project with Eden College.

The children at Tree Tops helped to make the large wall mural, as well as a smaller flower which would be put up in one of the classrooms, and they each made individual flowers out of bottle caps, cable ties and milk bottles which they could take home to show their parents what they had learnt.

“The teachers were involved as well which is really important, as for an effective workshop, the entire team must be on board,” said Robin.

Nas Amod and Megan Fourie from Tree Tops said as an eco school, it was great to be involved in this project.

“Using recycled material, the children learnt a new skill and practiced team work. Before the workshop, we took the children around the garden giving them a lesson on indigenous plants. We aim for a creative, happy environment for the children, who love to be creative, to make things and see the finished product,” they said.
