Learn about controlled burning

Bongani Zungu will give an overview of the work of eThekwini Municipality’s Fire and Invasive Species Control Programme.

BOTANICAL Society KZN Coastal Branch will host an illustrated talk entitled The Role of Prescribed Burns in Grassland Management, on Monday, 28 May at Durban Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre, at 5.30pm for 6pm.

The speaker is Bongani Zungu, programme manager for the Fire and Invasive Species Control (FISC) Programme of the Restoration Ecology Branch, Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department at eThekwini Municipality.

Bongani will explain why controlled veld-burning is needed to maintain the ecological functioning of indigenous grasslands.

The process is complex and is not undertaken lightly, and many variables come into the equation.

Conditions on the day have to be conducive too. In this talk Bongani will give an overview of the work of eThekwini Municipality’s Fire and Invasive Species Control Programme.

Entrance including tea at the start is R30 for BotSoc members, R50 for visitors and R20 for students. Proceeds to BotSoc branch projects
