Sporting event planned for special needs youth

Fiducia is hosting a planning meeting at Westpark School for a sports programme for youth with Down's Syndrome and Autism.

PLANS are underway to host a sports event for youth with Down’s Syndrome and Autism. A meeting, hosted by FIDUCIA, for anyone interested in getting involved in the sporting event, will be held at Westpark School on Saturday, 12 May from 1pm to 3pm.

FIDUCIA was created to empower young adults with intellectual and development challenges and to facilitate an environment to realise their potential and pursue their dreams through innovative programmes and community integration. This is achieved by programmes that focus on vocational and life skills, fitness, arts and music.

Currently the organisation’s main focus is on the youth and young adults with Down’s Syndrome and Autism. The project is a sports programme for young adults, and sporting codes offered are adapted for their participation at a basic level and also for the competitive level, including Special Olympics and Down’s Syndrome games based on individual ability.

The organisation is appealing to people who have experience in coaching sporting codes, especially with persons with intellectual challenges, to get involved. The relevant sports codes are swimming, shot putt, standing long jump and 50m and 100m walking.

Anyone interested in attending the meeting is encouraged to contact 064 573 1515 or fiduciasne@gmail.com.
