Workshop explores dementia

Tafta is offering a Dementia workshop for carers and health professionals involved in dementia care.

THE Association for the Aged will run a once-off workshop on dementia care facilitated by Dementia expert Rayne Stroebel in May.

The workshop, entitled Dementia: the person behind the disease, takes place at Tafta’s Anna Conradie Service Centre, Tafta Lodge, 42 South Beach Avenue, Durban, on 23 May from 7.30am to 3.30pm.

Stroebel, who holds a Masters degree in Dementia Studies from the University of Stirling, (Scotland) and is also the managing director of care training provider Geratec, said the workshop is aimed at people who would like to understand more about people who live with dementia.

“We will take a very specific stance in exploring the person behind the disease with a focus on wellbeing and strength based psychology. People often do no “suffer” from dementia, but they indeed suffer from the way that society treats them. During this workshop a new way of seeing vulnerable people will be explored, and tools will be given to help the carer engage in a more constructive way with the person living with dementia.”

According to Alzheimers SA, as of 2013, there were an estimated 44.4 million people with dementia worldwide. According to South Africa’s 2011 census, there are approximately 2.2 million people in South Africa with some form of dementia. “These are worrying statistics and of particular concern for the health fraternity who must adequately equip carers and even friends and family members of people living with dementia,” said Tafta CEO, Femada Shamam.

The workshop costs R150 per person. RSVP by 11 May by visiting the Tafta website on www.tafta.org.za or contacting Ummah Hanie Ally on 031 332 3721 or intake@tafta.org.za. Booking is essential.
