Pemberton learners show true community spirit

Learners from Pemberton Educare donated a new sign board to well-known street vendors.

CHILDREN from Pemberton Christian Educare in Morningside recently donated a new sign to well-known street vendors, Shirley and Allan Pretorius.

Karen Smith, principal of Pemberton, said she passed Shirley and Allan every day, and had chatted with Shirley regularly over the past few years.

“Shirley is such a lovely woman and we have gotten to know each other well. On one of my visits, I noticed their signboard wasn’t looking as pretty as it had been and decided to raise funds to get them another one as our way of giving back to the community,” she said.

Karen approached the parents of the school’s learners who gave donations to have a new sign made for Shirley, who was so grateful for the gesture.

“I am over the moon as our other sign was almost nine years old. I thank the parents and Karen for this gift,” she said.
