Workers’ Day: Unions march through CBD

Workers Day rallies were held across Durban today.

HUNDREDS of union members joined the Workers’ Day rallies and marched through Durban today.  The COSATU affiliated unions gathered at the City Hall and marched to Curries Fountain where a number of activities have been planned throughout the day.

Earlier this week, Cosatu president S’dumo Dlamini called upon all workers to unite against their common enemy, Monopoly Capital. The union reportedly has a long list of concerns and demands, the biggest of which is the high unemployment rate and is demanding more inclusive economic growth.

Rival union, South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) also held a Workers’ Day rally in Durban.  Its members marched from King Dinizulu Park to City Hall. The union has been vocal in its criticism of Cosatu and affiliated unions agreeing to the national minimum wage, which it said legitimised poverty.  In a statement this week, Saftu said it would continue its campaign to have the National Minimum Wage Bill scrapped and would strive for a living minimum wage.
