Nature lover replaces lost trees

Shirley Pretorius has replaced two of the trees lost along Lilian Ngoyi (Windermere) Road during last October's storm.

WELL-KNOWN Morningside blanket seller and nature lover, Shirley Pretorius, has done her bit for the environment by replacing two of the trees lost along Lilian Ngoyi (Windermere) Road during last October’s storm.

Shirley said while she and her son Allan were sitting at their site in Lilian Ngoyi Road selling blankets on 10 October, the wind came up and the rain started to pelt down. She said they were lucky to not have been hurt by six trees which were literally uprooted around them.

“All within a space of five minutes, the six trees fell over. The wind was so strong that it uprooted them, thankfully we were able to get away before they all came down at our site,” she said.

Shirley said she was saddened by the loss of the trees and has slowly started replanting indigenous trees at her site.

“I sourced the trees and have planted a flat crown tree which will be the main shade tree, and a nesteria which will hopefully give us some shade by next summer. I am looking forward to seeing them grow and I am happy to be able to do my bit to replace the trees,” she said.
