Truck hijacker arrested in Umbilo

A Blue Security officer came to the rescue of a truck driver who had been hijacked by three armed men.

AN officer from a local security company came to the rescue of a truck driver who was hijacked by three armed men on 23 April.

According to Capt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS, at around 10.30pm on the N3 near Escourt, the river was stopped by the men who requested a lift to Durban.

“Once on the road one of the men seated next to the driver pulled out a gun and pointed it at him while the other man, sitting in the back seat grabbed him around the neck. He was pulled to the back seat of the truck and tied up. One of the suspects took control of the truck and drove towards Durban,” she said.

Makaula said during the journey the suspects discussed what they were going to do with the man and the truck and a heated argument between them broke out along Williams Road in Umbilo.

“The men pulled over and the man tried to get loose. He saw a Blue Security van and screamed for help. When the hijackers saw security officers approaching they abandoned the truck and fled. One of the men was apprehended by a security officer. He was arrested and a cellphone, wallet and the truck were recovered,” she said.

Makuala said no shots were fired and Umbilo SAPS attended the scene. The truck and trailers were handed back to the lawful owner.
