GORDON Road Park has been spruced up thanks to the combined efforts of Florida Road UIP and eThekwini Municipality..
Florida Road UIP precinct manager, Jarrod Evans, said the park had been in urgent need of some tender loving care. “We hope that by adding a pathway at the rear of the park, and relocating plants and adding lighting, that more people will be encouraged to use this facility.
“I would love to see the park being used by the community for the right reasons. We want to see families out with kids, but we need facilities to be in place, such as benches,” he said. Evans said he had spoken to the Parks Department, and was told benches would be sourced for the park.
Evans said the rear of the park was formerly a large flower bed, but it had been hard to maintain.
“The Parks Department came in and relocated the plants elsewhere, and we are looking to grass over this area and expand the footprint of the park, so to speak. Our Cleaning and Greening staff put in a new pathway a few weeks ago and Parks measured the area and will be securing grass,” he said.

Complimenting this work are new flood lights installed by the Parks Department and Architectural Services. The LED lights have been installed higher up to prevent theft and have been re-positioned to face downwards in order to create more light.
“There used to be old flashlights about half way up the street poles, facing upwards. These were easily accessible and were being stolen. The energy efficient LED lights have been installed and the area is a lot brighter at night,” he said.
Evans added that the toilets inside the multi-use kiosk at the park had also been refurbished.”These are small interventions at the park but I hope they go a long way to encouraging the community to use the park,” he said.
