Dancers make their mark

Dance Direction International made its mark at the World Lyrical Dance Federation Competition.

DANCE Direction International dancers made their mark at the recent World Lyrical Dance Federation Competition.

Des van der Spuy, owner and principal dance teacher entered seven of her dance students as well as contemporary dance teacher and choreographer, Gabriel ‘Youngstar’ Masango, into the competition which was held in Durban. This competition is run worldwide and the dancers are then ranked at an international level.

Lyrical dance is a fusion of contemprary, ballet and jazz techniques and challenges the dancer and choreographer to use dance to tell a story. All of the Dance Direction entrees were placed and awarded trophies in their respective age categories in the competition.

Makayla Holmes was ranked 29th in the world in the U12 age group, Jake Savage was ranked 23rd, and Jude Bunyan 36th in the U14 category, Thomas Larche was moved up to a level 2 and is ranked 20th in the U16 section, Emma Penberthy was ranked 19th in the U18 category and Gabriel Masango is ranked 2nd in the world in the teacher section.

The dancers will be performing again in Johannesburg on 23 June in another round of the competition.
