Volunteers roll up their sleeves for Day of Caring

The Community Chest hosted its 20th annual Day of Caring this month.

THE Community Chest Day of Caring on 14 March was an ideal opportunity for local corporates and volunteers to step up and help with community projects at various charity organisations unable to raise the necessary funds for essential maintenance projects because of the volatile economic climate.

Volunteers from seven different companies, gave up a day of working at the office to complete projects which included gardening and painting at nine organisations in the greater Durban area.

It is not often that donors get to meet and become directly involved with beneficiaries of their funding which is why the Day of Caring has become so meaningful and deeply rewarding for all concerned.

Team Legal Aid SA Pinetown office, (back) Nondumiso Mngoma, Siyabonga Mncwabe, Najee Davids, Nompumelelo Ngcobo, Vukani Zuma, (front) Nompumelelo Hlongwane, Zinhle Mashaba and Sthembile Dlamini, painted the Life skills room at Azalea halfway house, a division of Durban and Coastal Mental Health, in Noble Road, Berea.

The day started with volunteers enjoying breakfast and receiving a goody bag full of sponsored refreshments. Each team was then dispatched to its relevant site, accompanied by Community Chest staff members, who were project co-ordinators.

Volunteers were treated to lunch and each team was awarded with a framed certificate in recognition of their participation.

“The Community Chest extends its gratitude to all sponsors, volunteers and project staff that made the Day of Caring a success,” said director, Gordon McDonald.
