Work abandoned at beachfront pool

Work is still not complete at the Rachel Finlayson Pool at the Durban beachfront.

WORK has seemingly come to a halt at Rachel Finlayson Pool on the Durban beachfront.

Councillor Nicole Graham said she had received a call two weeks ago from a resident who reported that workers had left the site and equipment had been removed.

“I’m disappointed to hear this, as work had been progressing nicely and was organised. It seemed as though construction would be complete by the assigned completion date of the end of April. I have been down to the pool on a number of occasions over the past two weeks and there has been no work in progress, there’s no equipment on site,” said Graham.

She said she had spoken to officials who were all convinced construction was in progress and were not aware of the issue.

“One official even suggested workers had left site to buy material, but it doesn’t make sense to take all staff off site in that case. Officials seem unable to locate the contractors to find out why they have left,” she said.

Graham said once again residents of the City were stuck with a construction site and a job that didn’t seem to be moving towards completion, when it should be a beautiful tourist site at the Durban beachfront.

“This issue is coupled with the erosion of the Durban beachfront, which should be a huge economic driver. Tourists are increasingly going elsewhere, with visitor numbers decreasing. This pool has been closed for three festive seasons, and now the Easter holidays as well,” she said.
