#PowerOutage surges through Durban

The electricity department is yet to release a statement about what sparked the power outage.

RESIDENTS throughout Durban remain ‘powerless’ following a massive power outage.

Reports from residents across eThekwini have flooded the Highway Mail newsroom, claiming areas like Westville, Pinetown, Hillcrest, Cowies Hill, Riverhorse Valley, Queensburgh, Botha’s Hill, Glenwood, Umbilo, Durban North and uMhlanga have been affected.

eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson, Tozi Mthethwa, confirmed the power outage but said she is unaware of what sparked the blackout.

She is currently awaiting feedback from the Electricity Department.

“Once I have feedback, I will be able to communicate it to the rest of Durban and hopefully the matter will be resolved soon,” she said.

Social media rumors have alleged that a substation in Mariannhill blew up, however, there is speculation that a transformer has also blown in Cato Ridge.

Updates to follow.

Minutes after the Highway Mail published the article the City published a statement on their official Facebook page.
