Injured suspect to appear in court

An unlicensed firearm with seven rounds of ammunition was recovered, and an injured suspect was rushed to hospital under police guard.

DURBAN Central Visible Policing members have been commended for their alertness while conducting crime prevention in Durban on 1 March.

Officers were conducting their crime prevention duties in the Durban Central Business District, when they saw four suspicious-looking suspects near a blue Hyundai Accent motor vehicle.

Lt Col Thulani Zwane from provincial SAPS said the officers approached the suspects and they all fled the area on foot.

“The members gave chase. While at bus terminals, one of the suspects who was in possession of a firearm allegedly pointed a firearm at police who allegedly shot and wounded the suspect,” he said.

The unlicensed firearm with seven rounds of ammunition was recovered and the injured suspect was rushed to hospital under police guard. The other three are still at large.

A case of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition was opened at Durban Central police station and the suspect will be charged.

“Once he is discharged from hospital, he will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court. The police are still searching for the other three who are still on the run,” said Zwane.

KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Maj Gen Bheki Langa commended the officers for their alertness.

“The recovered firearm will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crimes in the province. The suspect will also be profiled and check if he is not involved in any other crimes that were reported in the CBD area for the past few weeks,” he said.
