Sydenham, Overport, Musgrave water woes prompt calls for pipe replacement

Councillor Chris Pappas said since he has had no formal response, he has now written to the municipality to replace pipes as a matter of urgency.

MORE than a month after councillors raised serious concerns about constant water bursts in their wards, they are still waiting for a response from the municipality about what is to be done to address this problem.

Councillors Chris Pappas and Hassan Haniff raised concerns regarding repeated water bursts in specific roads that they are of the view need serious consideration for replacement and said the municipality had promised to send a letter stating that the department was investigating their concerns.

“The purpose of this was to inform residents so that they could see that action was being taken by the City to stop the almost daily bursts. To date, I have not received that letter and the problems with water bursts are worse than ever,” said Pappas.

He said the constant water outages were negatively affecting businesses in the Overport, Sydenham and Musgrave area, and a number of business had recorded losses because they were forced to shut down. Pappas said in addition to this, residents had to put up with unplanned outages which impacted negatively on their quality of life.

He said since he had received no formal response from the city he had now written to the municipality requesting that the pipes be replaced as a matter of urgency in Mallinson, Randles, Juniper, Riley, Clayton, Clare and Rippon Roads.

“According to the city budget there is money available for replacing and upgrading water pipes so I do not see this request as unreasonable. Considering that the area under question is an area that is developing organically without millions being spent by the city, it is only a fair request that the city support this growth by providing adequate services,” said Pappas.
