Enter Zumbathon and raise funds for children

"We encourage the community to come to the Zumbathon and browse the mini flea market where the children from the Young Entrepreneurs programme will be selling their products."

DURBAN Child and Youth Care Centre (DCYCC) is inviting the public to a Zumbathon on Saturday, 17 February from 9am to noon in the hall at the DCYCC premises in Kildare Road, Glenwood.

The Zumbathon will focus on fitness and health awareness, and is in partnership with FreshBox, the sponsor on the day. This event forms part of the Young Entrepreneurs programme, which was funded by the Spur Foundation.

“The Spur Foundation introduced us to the Young Entrepreneurs programme, and the Centre was selected to pilot this programme. Once successfully developed the aim is to roll this out to other homes and encourage SA corporates to get involved and adopt the programme at homes of their choice,” said Mandy Goble, director of DCYCC.

She said the programme is focused on teaching children entrepreneurial skills and financial literacy in a fun, creative, playful way – earning them skills they are able to implement even though they may not get to attend university, which helps with the unemployment and dropout rate.

“Our younger children are mentored regarding various products they can make, and the older groups will eventually be taught about various services they could include in their ‘business’. One of the practical requirements of the programme is to facilitate market days where the children will be given an opportunity to sell their product and earn pocket money,” said Mandy.

The programme also teaches the children about saving, investing and giving back. Other benefits of the programme is to open a bank account for each child participating so they can manage their own money and have a sense of ownership, independence and pride. As part of the ‘giving back’ section, a portion of the money they earn will be given back to the home as a donation.

Products that the young entrepreneurs have made which will be on sale at the mini flea market.

Mandy said currently the programme at the Centre is for children aged six to 14 however, they are currently in the process of finalising phases for children aged four to six and 14 to 18.

“We encourage the community to come to the Zumbathon and browse the mini flea market where the children from the programme will be selling their products. There will be food stalls, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation will also be present to do health screenings,” said Mandy.

The cost for participation in the Zumbathon is R30 for children under 13, R60 for adults and R100 per couple. Dress code is pink/red.
