ETHEKWINI Central Cluster conducted operations which focused on illicit drugs and firearms and arrested 90 suspects within the CBD and surrounding areas.
Operations were conducted between 2 and 6 February in the Central Business District and surrounding areas.
Const Zanele Khomo from Durban Central SAPS said: “A total of 90 suspects between the ages of 22 and 39 were arrested for various offences including possession of drugs, possession of suspected stolen property, possession of unlicensed firearms and drinking and driving. Suspects appeared in Durban Magistrates Court on different days for different charges.” On 5 February one suspect, who was found in possession of two unlicensed firearms, appeared in court and is expected to be back in court on 27 March. He is out on bail.

Khomo said in another incident, the eThekwini Central Trio task team members together with Trio Crime Detention worked on a business robbery case which was opened in Berea on 30 January.
“At around 9.45am, a business premises in Musgrave was robbed of telecommunication devices and an undisclosed amount of cash. On 31 January, members arrested a suspect in NMR Avenue who was found in possession of those telecommunication devices and the getaway vehicle was recovered,” said Khomo.
She said on 1 February officers arrested a further three suspects in the Mobeni area who also were found in possession of property stolen in Musgrave.
“All four suspects appeared in Durban Magistrates Court on Monday 5 February and were all remanded back in custody for a further seven days while an investigation continues,” she said.
EThekwini Central Cluster Commander Maj Gen Kenneth Mkhize praised the officers, who were issued with certificates of appreciation. Officers who participated in the operation were Warrant Officers Dladla, Pather, Cotton and Malapo, Sgt Klompas, and Constables Seedat, Britz, Abdool-Razak and Mdutyana.
