Steenbok rescued by civilian

"The Steenbok will be rehabilitated at CROW and later on released for a second chance at a free and sustainable life in the wild."

A STEENBOK was recently admitted to CROW after a truck driver from Durban stopped to rescue the one-month-old buck on his way home from Vryheid.

Sikiandhar Shake, a local truck driver from DS Transport Services, spotted the Steenbok and stopped to rescue the creature. Anxiously sitting in the road after being separated from her mother, Siki decided it would be best to bring her to CROW.

Siki safely admitted her to CROW where she is currently being bottle fed on full cream long life milk mixed with egg yolk. She drinks approximately 4l of milk a week and will stay on the bottle for another four to five months.

“The Steenbok will be rehabilitated at CROW and later on released for a second chance at a free and sustainable life in the wild. The team plans to release her towards the end of November this year,” said Chandré de Bruyn from CROW.

She said the Steenbok doesn’t have any injuries and has happily adapted to her new surrogate mother and adopted siblings.

“Along with the other grey duikers and bush buck, she is happily adapting to her new environment,” she said.
