UNISA students cause chaos in Durban city centre

Traffic has been severely affected in the Durban CBD.

PROTESTING UNISA students are marching through the City to show their unhappiness at the current state of affairs at the Durban campus. Stanger Street (Stalwart Simelane Street) has been affected with protesting students marching first to City Hall and then to the ANC head offices.

The situation has turned violent with some students tipping over bins in the city centre. There have also been reports of car stoning incidents.

Several students say they are unhappy they have not been allowed to register despite an extension by the university for first semester re-registrations.

Superintendent Glen Ndlovu, spokesman for Metro Police said he warned motorists to find alternative routes due to the protest action.

“Our members are on scene and are monitoring the situation. KE Masinga Road and Stalwart Simelane Street have been affected by the protesting students. I would urge motorists to avoid the area at this stage and find alternative routes,” he said.

On Monday three students were arrested and charged, several more were arrested on Thursday as police tried to rescue control of the situation.
