ILLEGAL dumping at the intersection of Cato and King Dinuzulu Roads, Berea, is not only an eyesore, but a health hazard, says a concerned resident.
The resident said the ongoing issue of dumping at the small park at this intersection needs to be addressed once and for all, as infrequent clean-ups by the municipality do nothing to curb the problem.
According to the resident, who asked not to be named, black bags are dumped in the park and a whom has been observed in the early mornings pushing a trolley filled with bottles which she then dumps on the pavement nearby.
“It is completely disgusting and an eyesore. Vagrants also dig through the rubbish. The bottles collect water and breed mosquitoes and rats run through the rubbish. I contacted the Health Department as this is a health hazard, but have had no joy,” she said.

The resident said she had made numerous complaints to the municipality, and a municipal truck had visited the site to clean-up, but that this was the first time in four to five months that any clean-up had been done at the park.
“Unfortunately the municipality only do a half decent job and the park isn’t cleaned up very well. I drive past the area every day and have noticed more rubbish starting to collect there. I don’t know how people can just dump their rubbish in the park, it is disgusting,” she said.
Ward 33 councillor, Mmabatho Tembe, said dumping at the site had been an issue for a long time and that it was an ongoing problem.
“As part of my and councillor Chris Pappas’ drive to curb illegal dumping, we will be liaising with DSW to put up no dumping signs and dustbins in the park as there are currently no dustbins on site. We urge residents to be vigilant and report when they see people dumping in the park, so it can be enforced. We need to name and shame the people dumping illegally,” she said.
