Beware high seas at expected Spring tides this week

Spring tides occur when there is a full moon and new moon and are indicative of above normal high tides and lower than normal low tides.

DURBAN beachgoers have been cautioned to be aware of high seas this weekend as a full moon Spring tide is expected along the coastline.

Craig Lambinon of the National Sea Rescue Institute, said the Spring tide was expected to peak on Wednesday, 31 January and would last until after the first weekend of February.

Beachgoers are urged to only swim in demarcated areas where lifeguards are on duty.

Earlier this month large waves washed a seven-year-old child off the pier at North Beach Durban. Despite rescue attempts by lifesavers, the child drowned.
