Learn about D’MOSS areas

The importance of the Durban Metropolitan Open Space System (D’MOSS) will be highlighted at a fundraising talk.

BOTSOC KZN Branch will host its next educational, fundraising talk, The Importance of D’MOSS, on Monday, 29 January at 5.30pm for 6pm at Durban Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre.

This is an illustrated presentation by Richard Boon, manager of Biodiversity Planning, Environmental Planning and Climate Protection at eThekwini Municipality, and is a repeat of his highly-recommended talk to the UKZN Durban Alumni Association.

The Durban Metropolitan Open Space System (D’MOSS) is a system of open spaces within the municipality. It incorporates 74 000ha of land and water, including areas of high biodiversity value, linked together in a viable network of open spaces.

Illustrative examples include nature reserves such as Paradise Valley, Burman Bush and Kenneth Stainbank Reserve, and large rural landscapes in the upper catchments and riverine and coastal corridors. Some areas of privately-owned land are also included in D’MOSS.

Richard Boon’s presentation will focus on the importance and history of the Durban Metropolitan Open Space System, opening our eyes to the integral roles these spaces play within eThekwini.

All welcome. Cost, including tea, is R30 for members of BotSoc, R40 for visitors and R20 for students. Proceeds go to Branch projects. No need to book. Contact botsoc-kzn@mweb.co.za, 031 201 5111 or 071 869 3693.
