Negotiations deadlocked between DUT and staff

"We as a labour we are committed to resolve this strike. It is the management who is not willing to come to the table."

NEGOTIATIONS between the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Management and the striking workers are deadlocked.

The strike which is organised by the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), National Health Education & Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) and Tertiary Education National Union of SA (Tenusa), has now entered its second week.

Speaking at the briefing, DUT council chairman Wiseman Madinane said: “The matter on whether the Vice Chancellor is fit for the position, must be off the table. Let us focus on what brought us to the deadlock, which is salary negotiations.”

The University’s Vice Chancellor Prof Thandwa Mthembu said: “Always when there are striking issues with HR matters in negotiating, I have always called meeting were I would try and appeal to all parties involved to move forward.”

Nehawu’s Milton Estrice, speaking on behalf of the three unions, said: “We as a labour are committed to resolve this strike. It is the management who is not willing to come to the table, with a team that is dedicated to resolve the impasse. We have had several meetings with the management.”

Meanwhile, on his visit to Unisa yesterday, Higher Education Deputy Minister Buti Manamela said University of South Africa (Unisa) students will be able to register for the 2018 academic year, despite the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) strike.

“The assurance I have received from both the Union and the university is that every student will be given an opportunity to register,” added Manamela.
