Car damaged in rock throwing

A rock was thrown at a car travelling on the N3 this morning, 24 January.

AN allegedly mentally disturbed man threw a rock at a passing car just before the Brickfield Road offramp on the N3 this morning.

According to Andreas Mathios from Blue Security, no injuries were reported. He said this man has been seen in the area previously,  running around naked on the centre median opposite the Durban Christian Centre.

“SAPS are mandated to remove potentially dangerous and unstable people who come across as mental or mentally disturbed, so when the public reports these people to the SAPS, they have a mandate to act. They are to then be taken to the RK Khan Hospital where they are kept for 30 days for an observation period after which a doctor makes an assessment to have that person declared mentally incapable. Then it becomes a problem of the state. This is the protocol that has to be followed,” said Mathios.

He said the fact that the man had caused problems in the area previously which people had failed to report to police, meant that some accountability had to be laid on the community.  ”

“If you do see people who should not be where you see them, for example on the centre median or exposing themselves in public, report them to the 10111 system,” he said.
