As waves lashed the beach, a seven-year-old child was swept off the pier at North Beach and tragically drowned.  Ethekwini Municipality closed the North Beach bathing area and pier as clean up operations continue. No infrastructural damage was reported during the high seas and clean up operations are expected to be completed by the end of today.

Beachgoers are warned however to be careful of washed up medical waste, including syringes the were dumped on the beach during the high tide. The source of the medical waste is unknown although some anglers admit that syringes are often found under the pier.
