Watch: Prof Ahmed Bawa speaks about new model for free education

"A great social change in the way education is approached and funded."

UNIVERSITIES South Africa’s (USAF) chief executive, Professor Ahmed Bawa says the new model for free education for poor students doesn’t mean that students can automatically assume that they have got access to the bursaries. Bawa was speaking at the Diakonia Centre, where he was set to address church leaders and church-based activists on the role of the church and civil society organs on education matters.

Meanwhile, the KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council (KZNCC) which organised the dialogue titled “The Role of the Church and Civil Society Organs on Education Matters” said it called on Church leaders to be more hands on in higher education structures and processes that would lead to the realization of these best practices.

“I think we need to make the assumption that we are in the throes of a very big societal change in terms of the school funding model, and what that means is that there ought to be a much larger participation of civil society groups and so on in the roll out of this new system,” said Bawa.
