DURBAN High School recently welcomed their Grade 8s for 2018 with a Leadership Camp from 12 to 14 January, followed by two days of orientation before the first day of school on Wednesday.
During the orientation, the Grade 8s were addressed by all relevant figures, including the head master, head of grade, academic head of grade, head prefect, and various subject, sports and cultural representatives, and briefed on the school code of conduct and discipline, in order to familiarise the boys with all that Durban High School offers, represents and expects.
In addition to this, the boys were able to then attend auditions for the music department, various sporting codes as well as went on a thorough tour of the school.
Learners were then divided into their various classes and were then able to change into their sporting kit to participate in the various sporting code trials.
Head master, Mr A D Pinheiro, said each boy should embody the words of 9th head master of DHS, DC Thompson, that are featured in the school hall: “May each and every one of them ever remember that as he is, so is his school.”
Mr Pinheiro also encouraged the learners to get involved in all aspects of school and focus on doing their best academically and added: “Durban High School is a school of opportunity. Make the most of what is on offer.”
Orientation into Durban High School has been a tradition for many years and allows the new comers to feel comfortable and settled by the time the first day of school arrives. The official welcome ceremony, the bell-ringing ceremony, will take place this week to ensure the learners are welcomed into the DHS brotherhood, a fundamental feature of Durban’s oldest school.
