Striking staff affect registration

The strike is related to a breakdown in salary increase negotiations.

THE Durban University of Technology (DUT) says registrations have been slightly affected, following the on-going strike action by the staff.

The dispute is understood to be related to a breakdown in salary increase negotiations for 2018.

According to the University’s spokesperson Noxolo Memela, Union leadership will be invited to a meeting scheduled in the course of this week, where further attempts will be made to resolve the current impasse.

“DUT management wishes to reiterate that it remains committed to resolving the impasse and in ensuring that the university and its functions return to normality as soon as possible. Management also wishes to indicate that it is committed to continued engagement with the unions in efforts to resolve the staff strike.”

The combined union strike, organised by the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), National Health Education & Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) and Tertiary Education National Union of SA (Tenusa), saw the striking staff gather outside Vice Chancellor Thandwa Mthembu’s office.

The University said first year students trying to register must have a firm offer and those who have not received confirmation from NSFAS, need to pay the initial first installment amount into the DUT bank account, and only then can they register.

Those who received NSFAS approval, may register online without making a payment of the first initial installment.

Meanwhile, returning students who come from households that meet the required thresholds for free higher education, need to be cleared by NSFAS and provide evidence to that effect. Students without evidence of NSFAS funding upon registration are required to pay the minimum first installment.

“Although registration was slightly affected this morning, students are being registered. The University reiterates its encouragement to all students to register online particularly in lieu of the staff strike. DUT Management would like to assure its stakeholders that it continues to work towards ensuring that the functions and work of the university continue and that the safety and protection of students, staff and university property remain a priority. DUT remains open.” concluded Mamela.
