Long service recognised

Long service is what keeps organisational culture alive.

THE best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. These are the words that Andros Baumann, the assistant slots manager at Suncoast Casino lives by each and every day.

Baumann, along with two other colleagues, were recognised for their 20 years of service with the Tsogo Sun Group at the Suncoast staff awards event held recently. Baumann’s association with the gaming industry began in the late eighties when he worked part-time at Port Edward’s casino while studying.

Baumann joined Tsogo Sun in September 1997 at Emnotweni Casino in Nelspruit, which was one of the first legal casinos to open in South Africa.

“It’s unbelievable how quickly time has slipped by, to think that this awesome journey started 20 years ago is unbelievable. I remember offloading those first slot machines into the casino like it was yesterday,” he says. “It’s been fascinating to witness how the ‘one-armed bandits’ have evolved from mechanical machines with a lever on the side, to today’s hi-tech slot machines that feature video and 3D effects. I have also witnessed many changes behind the scenes,” said Baumann. He said the one constant has been the company culture and that is the main reason that he has stayed with the Tsogo Sun Group for so long.

A part of Baumann’s job involves ensuring that all 1 600 of Suncoast’s slot machines are working and in excellent condition. In addition Baumann, along with fellow managers, oversees all jackpot and credit pay-outs.

“Over the years I have seen many winners at Suncoast, from people who won thousands of rands to people who have won millions.”

Deshnee Naidu, Human Resources Manager at Suncoast, said: “Long service staff members such as Andros Baumann are the ones that keep our organisational culture going and inspire the younger staff to live that culture each day, so we are always grateful their 20 year contributions.” says Naidu.

Mike Dowsley, the executive director of Suncoast, thanked each of the 34 staff members who had a combined total of 370 years of long service.
