BABA Zondi who used to sleep in a huge plastic cover on the corner of JB Marks (Chelmsford) Road and Che Guevara (Moore) Road, has found a new home in the form of a shelter in the Point area. The plight of the elderly man was highlighted in an article which appeared on the Berea Mail on 14 December and drew a wide response from the community, who rallied to help. According to Shaun Fincham, who facilitated the process of finding Zondi a shelter, said he has now regained his self-worth after months of sleeping on the pavement.

“It is unfortunate that there has not been any contact from family or relatives of the old man, but what I can say is that he at a very good place than he was. We took Baba Zondi to a shelter called The Nest on 20 December, where he gets to shower and have a hot meal every day. He has regained much of his self-worth because because living on the streets for that long can take away your human dignity,” said Fincham.
Fincham said that together with help from two women from Glenwood, arrangements had been made to transfer Baba Zondi to the Mother Theresa Centre at the weekend. Mother Theresa Centre in Shallcross is a project of Gift of the Givers which provides a home for abandoned seniors and neglected children.
