Renew business licenses, warns city

Business owners have until 31 January 2018 to renew their business licenses.

BUSINESS owners are advised to renew the licenses of any businesses licensed with eThekwini Business Licensing Department before 31 January, 2018.

Business licenses can be renewed at the Business Licensing Offices where the initial application for a  business license was made.

The Municipality’s Business Licensing Manager, Qondi Liqwa said this procedure is conducted annually and is  critical under Section 15(1) of the Businesses Regulations in terms of the Businesses Act 71 of 1991.  The Act requires that every license holder must confirm annually that the business for which the license was issued, continues to be conducted from the premises specified in the license.  It also requires that no other business for which license is required in terms of the Businesses Act, is being conducted from the same licensed premises.

Liqwa said in some instances business owners branch out into other businesses using the same license. This was unlawful as, for example, restaurant regulations could not be the same as the requirments for a nightclub.

“We will conduct inspection raids after the stipulated period to catch defaulters. Those who have not renewed by that time,  will find their licenses lapsed and our department’s enforcement staff will prosecute them for trading without a license. They will be required to re-apply for licences which has cost implications whereas renewing is free,” she said.

License holders need to produce their original business license, ID document, company or business documents, a proxy letter and South African Police Services fingerprints clearance with no illicit activity identified (only applicable to licence holders with item 2 licenses).
