Berea Mail’s top stories for 2017

A look back at our biggest articles of 2017.

AS 2017 slowly comes to an end, the Berea Mail team took some time to reflect on the stories we have covered throughout the year.

There have been joyous, heartbreaking and sometimes shocking stories our community has shared with us.

However, here is a list of our biggest articles for the year:

The weather has wrecked some havoc on Durban throught the year, but the whole KwaZulu-Natal was left shaken when a cyclone weather system hit Madagascar in March. The cyclone caused storm surf along Durban’s North Beach forcing the authorities to close the beach as large waves battered the beachfront.

North Beach was closed after monster waves battered Durban’s beachfront promenade.
The Berea Mail team was shocked when this Video of the Day went viral in June. Making it one of our most read articles of the year.

One our most shocking articles of 2017. We could not believe it when we received reports of a bomb exploding in Berea in May this year. However, when we contacted Capt Poobalan Naidoo of the Berea SAPS, he confirmed that five people had suffered serious injuries when a package received at a residence in Stephen Dlamini Road had exploded.

We later learned that authorities had discovered a second bomb, and in an update we revealed that three family members and the two delivery men, who dropped off the package, were injured in the initial explosion.

Saleem Khan, who is believed to have been the target of the attack, was on his way home when the parcel bomb exploded in his lounge, severely injuring his son Zakariah, his daughter-in-law Maseeha and his mother, Sara-Bibi Khan. Khan’s son had to undergo brain surgery after the attack.

Durban’s very own social media sensation! The cheeky Taylor Morrison (3), with a pair of chocolate brown eyes that twinkle one moment and are all seriousness the next, had captured our – and the world’s attention this year.

Thousands of people from across the world follow her on Facebook and YouTube where her mom posts photographs and video clips of Taylor doing what she does best … talking, scolding and discussing all manner of things with three-year-old logic.

And we just love catching up with the the pint-sized package of sassiness every now and then.

If you haven’t seen Taylor’s videos yet, check them out here.
