Municipality investigates Kennedy Road fire

It is still unclear what sparked the blaze as most residents whose shacks were destroyed by the fire were away.

ETHEKWINI Municipality is investigating a fire that destroyed more than 80 shacks in the Kennedy Road Informal Settlement on Tuesday (26 December 2017).

According to the City’ spokesperson Tozi Mthethwa, it is still unclear what sparked the blaze.

“At this stage, it is still unclear what sparked the blaze as most residents whose shacks were destroyed by the fire were away. However, there was a report from a resident that the fire started at one of the shacks that was unoccupied and no one was injured. The Municipality’s Disaster Management Unit officials will return to the area tomorrow (29 December 2017) to conduct a proper assessment with a hope that most of the owners would have returned from holiday,” said Mthethwa.
