City ignores pleas to fix substation fence

Resident, Meyrick Rubin said he first noticed the fence had been vandalised more than two years ago.

An appeal to the city to mend a hole in the boundary fence around the electrical substation in Kilburn Avenue, Musgrave has fallen on deaf ears, says resident Meyrick Rubin who first noticed the fence had been vandalised more than two years ago.

“I saw that the fence had been ripped or cut and immediately reported it to the municipality. I spoke to the mayor’s secretary at that time, but nothing came of it. I have emailed different departments and have had no response. I can’t believe nothing has been done about it in two years – it doesn’t take long to fix a fence,” he said.

Rubin said he was concerned copper thieves would get in and gain access to the substation itself.

“Security is the first thing that should be attended to. Thieves could get in and rip the station to pieces, and a very large area of Berea would have no electricity. I had to stop three guys going in last week. Something needs to be done,” he said.

Berea Mail initially requested comment from eThekwini Municipality on 8 November on when this issue would be addressed, however, to date there has been no response from the city.
