Mauritius holiday marks milestone anniversary

The couple say they have been in love every day for the past 55 years, and feel blessed to celebrate this milestone anniversary.

SAM and Kay Soobramoney will celebrate 55 years of marriage on 9 December while on holiday in Mauritius.

The couple, formerly from Umhlatuzana and who currently live in Kensington, Morningside, say they have been in love every day for the past 55 years, and feel blessed to celebrate this milestone anniversary.

“I think the most popular word people use to describe us is ‘inseparable’. There is little we do without each other,” said Kay, (71).

While the couple had an arranged marriage, Sam, (81), said he fell head over heels in love with the then 16-year-old Kay when he first met her.

“For me, it was Sam’s smile and impeccable grooming that won my heart!” said Kay.

The couple were married within two months of meeting and exchanged vows at Jewel Hall in Clairwood on 9 December 1962.

“Our first years of marriage were joyous and challenging and the birth of our four children brought us closer together,” said Sam.

Sam and Kay are proud parents of Arulmani and Kalaivani, who are both HODs at schools in Durban, a son, Selvan, a credit and chartered account manager for Nedbank in Johannesburg, and Veni, an optometrist. They have seven grandchildren, who they are very close to.

While raising their children, Sam worked as a teacher at Chatsworth High School and at many primary schools and Kay worked for Bilbo Fashions, as well as being involved as chair of the Lotus Women’s Group in Umhlatuzana for 13 years. They retired together to enjoy spending time with their grandchildren.

The couple are both Saivites and attend Sivan Kovil in Bayview, Chatsworth.

Sam and Kay have enjoyed travelling over the past few years and took a six week trip to North and South India, Singapore and Malaysia in 1996. In 2008 they visited America and the UK for seven weeks, and to mark the milestone of their golden anniversary in 2012, they went to South India for three weeks, as well as Goa, Kerala, Cochen and Dubai.

“We’re looking forward to celebrating our anniversary with the trip to Mauritius and will be spending Christmas and new year with our son and grandchildren,” said Kay.
