The public is encouraged to drop off bags of plastic bottle tops with security at the gate at Penzance Primary.
PENZANCE Primary School is thrilled that through its current eco project to collect bottle tops, a young man will be the recipient of a new wheelchair.
John Legemaate, HOD and head of the eco club at the school, started the initiative four months ago after reading about the Sweethearts Foundation online.
“I was looking for a project to do through the eco club, as I would like the school to become an Eco School, but this won’t happen if we don’t do projects. I saw this initiative that involves the collection of plastic bottle tops and felt we should do that as a school,” he said.

The collection of 450kg of bottle tops equals one wheelchair and together the school community managed to collect 150kg of bottle tops.
“One of my pupils told me that her mom wanted the school to collect bags from her work, Mpact, and we were thrilled when we discovered the bags were filled with 400kgs of bottle tops! Our first recipient is a 34-year-old who was paralysed after being caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting. Our goal is three wheelchairs by the end of 2018, but slow and steady wins the race. This is one way we are able to give back to the community, which is very important to do,” he said.
