Urgent plan needed in eThekwini to stop rolling blackouts

The municipality’s Head of Electricity shockingly revealed that two of the four main lines feeding electricity to the city are damaged, putting a severe strain on electricity supply.

THE Democratic Alliance (DA) in eThekwini has expressed concern over the constant power outages occurring all over the city. In the recent months, the city has experienced an unstable electricity supply that has resulted in rolling blackouts across the city.

According to Councillor Hassin Haniff, at a meeting on 7 November, the municipality’s Head of Electricity, Maxwell Mthembu, shockingly revealed that two of the four main lines feeding electricity to the city were damaged, putting a severe strain on electricity supply.

“What is more concerning is the reliable information that the DA has received that the electricity department does not have the resources to fix this problem,” he said.

Haniff said with the holidays around the corner, and eThekwini being one of the cities that attracts thousands of visitors, this problem could have dire consequences. He said the DA was calling on Mayor Zandile Gumede to urgently attend to this issue.

“We are also calling on the electricity department to submit a plan to the municipality’s executive committee, detailing what will be done to ensure a stable supply of electricity to residents and the thousands of visitors expected during the important holiday season,” he said.

Haniff said the department needed to present a detailed plan on what would be done to upgrade the city’s ageing and ailing infrastructure to prevent future blackouts.
