Armed robbers exploit kindness

One of five robbers called a staff member to the gate and asked for water before holding them up.

ARMED robbers asked for a glass of water before turning on staff at a Glenwood business premises and holding them up at knife point yesterday.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said one of five robbers had called a staff member to the gate and asked for water before holding them up.

“The suspects opened the driveway gate, which was closed but not locked, and went into the office where they held up staff members with a knife, demanding cash.

They tied up the staff members and forced them into a bathroom,” Mathios said.

The suspects fled on foot with R2500 in cash, jewellery and a cellphone.

Mathios cautioned business and home owners to ensure their gates are always in good working order and locked during the day and at night.

“With warmer weather now starting to set in criminals will be more likely to use tactics such as this that prey on the kindness of people.

Be vigilant and always keep a safe distance from any strangers who approach the gate with requests as you discern the situation. If you suspect that the person has criminal intent tell them that you will first call your security company or the police before assisting and watch their reaction,” Mathios said.
