Elderly treated to high tea

"They have so little, but they are so happy and grateful for everything they have."

A cup of tea and a slice of cake is what pensioners at the Salvation Army’s Thembela Home enjoyed when they were treated to a high tea function organised by local resident, Laura-May Louw together with her husband and a friend.

When Laura-May Louw first heard about the home some 18 months ago through her church, Olive Tree, she immediately asked how she could extend a hand to help.

“Since then I have spent time going to chat to the residents, have taken them cakes and gone to do their nails. They are such special people and I have enjoyed getting to know them. They have so little, but they are so happy and grateful for everything they have,” she said. Laura-May said she had also done a toiletry drive last year for the residents.

Laura-May decided to enlist her friend, photographer Brenda Scheepers from Bukaminas Creative, to visit the home with her and her husband David. Brenda took photos of each of the residents to send to their families at Christmas.

“Around 95 per cent of the people I have taken photos of have told me their families live overseas, so they were excited to have a lovely photo to send them,” said Brenda.

David’s company, Grab IT, sponsored the prints of the photos and installed CCTV cameras at the premises while Laura-May organised a high tea with donations of cakes from Tracey Vieira and Lyn Finch, for the residents to enjoy with their tea.

Laura-May is appealing to the community for donations of food, pockets of vegetables, coffee, tea and milk, as well as toiletries, for the home. Contact laura.louw@grab-it.co.za.
