Bringing art to the children

Durban artist, David Douglas, shares his love for art with children in Glenwood through art competition.

A DURBAN artist, David Douglas, shared his love for art with local children who were delighted to receive prizes following the draw of a local colouring-in competition and children’s art exhibition at Glenwood Village Market recently.

David said he decided a few years ago to try teaching. “I initially taught children and grown-ups, but fairly quickly realised my chosen path and passion lay with the children. I find it very rewarding and fulfilling to nurture their developing minds in a positive way. Art has many benefits to children, and to us all,” he said.

David’s ArtPlaySchool, “Happy Hands (Happy Heart)” is a place where children willingly participate in a positive, relaxed environment, and meet in a little-known jewel of a park in Glenwood.

“We have butterflies and Red Duiker for company. We love learning, painting, playing, exploring. They say you’re never too old to have your second childhood, and I’m having mine now! I hope my students will continue to pursue their interest in art in some way,” he said.

David said the recent colouring-in competition and exhibition at Glenwood Village was a dream come true for him.

“It was quite a momentous and emotional occasion with thrilled winners and proud parents,” he said.

He hopes to run another competition again soon. He thanked sponsors at Glenwood Village for the support.
