Mammoth challenge for knitters

The community is invited to take part in a knitathon in Glenwood on Saturday.

A KNITATHON under the banner of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day is being hosted at Once Stitch at a Time in Glenwood Village, Che Guevara Road (Moore), Glenwood on Saturday, 11 November from 9am to 1pm.

The charity, which makes blankets for the needy across South Africa, invites anyone who can knit or crochet to come along and make a square. Beginners are also very welcome. The squares made at the knitathon will then be joined to make blankets that will be included in the Massive Mandela Masterpiece (#MMM), set to become the largest portrait blanket in the world.

67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day volunteers across South Africa, as well as in other countries such as India, Britain, America, Italy and more, are busily making blankets in the six exact shades required for a giant portrait of the late Nelson Mandela.

These blankets, 1 764 in number, will then be sewn together by prisoners from Zonderwater Prison in Cullinan to the exact design of the portrait, placing the organisation in line for a fourth entry in the Guinness Book of World Records. The finished giant blanket will measure a whopping 4 500 square metres!

The image of Nelson Mandela on the blanket will only be discernable from the sky, and his face will, for a short time, even be visible from outer space. The portrait will then be dismantled and the thousands of individual blankets will be distributed to the various regions of South Africa for donation to people in need.

Anyone who wishes to contribute to the portrait is asked to contact info@67blankets.com.
