Litres for Education extends its reach

"Two of our local charities doing amazing work are iThemba Lethu, which works with Aids orphans, and Umthombo, which works with street children."

LITRES for Education, an educational trust started by the owners of BP Moore Road, is growing from strength to strength, and has recently added two more local beneficiaries.

Graeme and Zelda Schewitz, founders of the project, said their vision is to build a network of donor service stations across the country, and in so doing, afford every single motorist the opportunity to get involved in bettering the country, one litre at a time.

The Litres for Education Trust donates 10 cents per litre to the beneficiary chosen by the individual motorist, There are currently around 100 beneficiaries on the website. Motorists can join online and view the list. Graeme said the project had grown to include 25 service stations who have joined the programme and are supporting local communities.

“Two of our local charities doing amazing work are iThemba Lethu, which works with Aids orphans, and Umthombo, which works with street children. They have recently been added onto our list. Many of our beneficiaries are sustained solely through community donations and the people driving these charities are passionate, but need the finance to keep afloat. Next time you fill up, give a thought to those less fortunate and donate to our Litres for Education service stations in the community,” said Graeme.

Karen Brokensha from iThemba Lethu, said staff had started filling up at BP Moore Road as it was putting money back into their pocket.

“We appreciate the opportunity given the community aspect and heart behind the project. We see this as a way to reinvest back into the organisation ourselves, and the income generated will help sustain funding for our skills and education programme at iThemba Lethu,” she said.

Thabiso Mbonambi from Umthombo said he felt it was a good initiative and it would not only create awareness for the organisation, but the sustainability of funds would help the organisation provide services for the children.
