Patients given gift of sight on World Sight Day

Local hospitals performed free cataract operations for World Sight Day this October.

AHMED Al-Kadi Private Hospital (AAKPH) teamed up with the Islamic Medical Association of SA (IMASA) Durban Branch and McCord Provincial Eye Hospital to give the gift of sight to 40 financially challenged pre-selected community members in support of World Sight Day 2017 on 12 October.

“While we may be helping give the gift of sight, the true gift is being a part of this special initiative with Ahmed Al-Kadi Private Hospital and the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa. These pre-selected patients have been on the public sector waiting list for quite some time and we feel privileged to be able to step in and assist in giving the gift of sight which many take for granted,” said hospital manager of AAKPH, Mr Ahmed Docrat.

IMASA-Dbn branch cataract campaign coordinator, Mrs Yasiera Mahomed Suliman, said: “After a successful Mandela Day Cataract Camp, and Women’s Month Cataract Camp, the IMASA Durban branch is honoured to partner with AAKPH and we are pleased to have McCord Provincial Eye Hospital on board who will also be assisting by sponsoring the lenses for the procedures. It’s a cliché that we can’t help everyone but we proving that someone can help someone else and with these small but definite, and we hope recurrent, steps we can make a huge difference to the lives of people who otherwise would have no hope.”

The 40 pre-selected patients underwent their surgeries on the 13, 14, 20 and 21 October at the new Ahmed Al-Kadi Private Hospital, situated in Mayville, Durban. The cataract extractions were performed by the experienced skills of specialist ophthalmologists Dr P Andujar, Dr S Aghdasi, Dr M Khan and Dr K Moodley as well as the nursing team of Ahmed Al-Kadi Private Hospital.

LIFE ENTABENI HOSPITAL

ON Monday, 16 October, Life Entabeni Hospital’s Eye Centre commemorated ‘World Sight Day’.

The Life Entabeni team alongside the ophthalmologists and their anaesthetists, contributed to this annual health day by giving the gift of sight to eight patients.

These patients were pre-selected by the surgeons and were given the opportunity to visit the facility for an all expense paid cataract surgery.

They were given bedroom slippers and gowns pre-surgery and then treated to goodie bags and a delicious meal upon completion of their surgery. A thank you goes to the staff, doctors and sponsors for making this day a great success.
