Fuel hike hits motorists

The fuel hike comes into effect on Wednesday.

FOUR CENTS. That’s what motorists will have to pay extra per litre of fuel come Wednesday when the price of petrol goes up.

According to the Department of Energy, diesel will increase by between 23 and 27 cents a litre, illuminating paraffin will go up by 21 cents per litre while the retail price of LP Gas increases by 17 cents per kilogram.

The latest hike is attributed to the moderate rise in the price of petrol to the weakening rand against the US dollar and a slight increase in the average Brent Crude oil price.

In the meantime, the Automobile Association is reportedly warning motorists of another massive fuel hike before Christmas.

A spokesperson for the AA says the impending increase is linked to Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba’s medium-term budget policy statement he announced last week.

Layton Beard, speaking for the AA said the full effect of the weakening rand in the wake of Gigaba’s medium-term budget statement had not yet been felt by fuel prices.

He said the impact would start with next months fuel calculations and warned South Africans to prepare for more hikes before Christmas.
