Umbilo SAPS urges businesses to beef up security following two robberies last week.

AS the festive season approaches, Umbilo SAPS advises all businesses to beef up security.

Capt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS said last week four men entered a bed factory shop in Glenwood, where they produced firearms and demanded cash.

“They got away with an undisclosed amount of money and cellphones belonging to the employees, fleeing in the direction of Dalton Hostel. Police are investigating a case of business robbery,” she said.

Makaula said as the police were attending to this robbery, another business robbery was in progress.

“Again, four men entered a fabric shop on Callas Road and pretended to be looking at fabric. They suddenly produced firearms and demanded cash. They got away with an undisclosed amount of money and employees’ cellphones. Police are investigating a case of house robbery,” she said.

In another incident on 20 October, W/O Sibiya was patrolling around Dalton Hostel at 7am when he heard gunshots from the hostel. He went inside to investigate and found two men fighting.

“One of the men was shot on the left side of the chest. According to the accused, he was defending himself from the victim whom he alleged was also armed. According to the victim, the suspect was accusing him of an attempted robbery which took place in the early hours of the morning at a Tavern in Williams Road,” she said.

Police are investigating a case of attempted murder.
