Police stop and search operation recovers unlicensed firearms in Umbilo

The suspects vehicle was also stolen in Lancers Road in the Durban CBD, two weeks ago.

IN the early hours of Sunday, Durban Central K9 Unit members were conducting an operation in Umbilo when a vehicle with four occupants was spotted in Moore Road.

The police searched the occupants and confiscated three unlicensed firearms and housebreaking implements in their possession.

The suspects were immediately arrested and taken to Umbilo police station for detention.

Initial investigation revealed that the suspects’ vehicle was stolen from a business premises during a robbery incident in Lancers Road in the Durban CBD, two weeks ago.

Suspects will be charged for possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of housebreaking implements, possession of stolen property and will also be linked to the business robbery case that was opened at Durban Central police station.

They are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court this week and the firearms will be taken for ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in any crime in the country.

All three firearms had their serial numbers filed off.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the vigilance of the police officers which led to the arrest and the recovery of firearms as well as the stolen vehicle.

“Police will continue to eradicate the proliferation of firearms in the province to prevent serious and violent crimes. Suspects will also be profiled to ascertain if they can be linked to other similar crimes in Durban and surroundings,” he said.
